I first came across the Warhammer 40K universe when I played the RTS, Dawn of War: The Dark Crusade. But even pawing oilily through. Now, I read these books in the omnibus version (pictured above) which consisted of the novel Xenos, Malleus, and Hereticus, as well as the short stories Missing in Action and Backcloth for a Crown Additional. I've bought a 54mm Eisenhorn figure, and he's currently sitting in bits in a drawer at my parents' house. Of the two, Eisenhorn is far better, it's not fair to say really, since it's really an omnibus packed with the original trilogy of novels, as well as some great, interconnecting short stories in between them, but I liked the overall style of this one more. Horus Rising was good, The Eisenhorn books do for the 40,000 universe what no one else has to date, and that's expand in ways I never thought possibleand I'm pretty solid on my geek 40k knowledge. Eisenhorn back in high school, I felt like it was the wild variety and complexity of the Abnettverse that really glowed in a sea of samey space marines. In the meantime I have been getting to see what Abnett has done with his own Inquisitor, Gregor Eisenhorn. However I ;ve never read any of the 40k expanded universe stuff. It is a fairly extensive online reference for all things Warhammer- Fantasy and 40K- and will help you translate some of the craziness. It wasn't until I got back to California that I realized Marc had recommended a three-volume series, albeit one sent to me as an omnibus edition.
